Beats & Music Production

#JovanOnMaschine.

“I loved watching “Behind-The-Music” and learning about the process of the coming-of-age of an artist along with how their music was created. My dad got me a digital piano as a kid, and in middle school, played African drums. But one day in 2008, my cousin planted the seed that I could create beats on a level like those I saw on the TV Screen.”

What piqued Interdisciplinary Artist Jovan Landry's interest in music production was seeing the behind-the-scenes process of music artists in TV documentaries such as "Behind The Music," "Unsung" and MTV Diaries." In 2008, one year after the debut of YouTube and looking up to her musically inclined cousin, she quickly learned that making music is attainable on an independent level. With beats specializing in Hip-Hop, House, Tribal, Soul, and Meditative sounds, Landry takes influences from Timbaland, Tom Misch, Kanye West, and Elaquent, just to name a few.

Jovan gained confidence in her production skills when she utilized her beats on her 2017 album “Growth." Jovan Landry then produces a slew of records on the all-women produced & performed album "Synergy in 2019", and in 2020, releases her first instrumental EP, "World Vibe" inspired by the sounds of Cuba, Nigeria, Haiti, and her hometown, Chicago. Jovan did her first dance collaboration with Keyierra Collins for "Clara Lucille: In Crossing," where Collins dances and pulls Landry on a wooden cart, symbolizing labor on the body, while Landry manipulates a pre-recorded beat live.

Jovan continues to sharpen her skills through composing for herself & other local music acts, laying sounds for podcasts & dance artists, dropping beat tapes, and participating in Producer Showcases.
